How to Wax your own Eyebrows: Step by Step Guide

Finally, the Perfect guide on how to wax your own eyebrows at home!

No more uneven eyebrows or getting burnt by hot wax when you go to get your brows done. Say goodbye to spending a ton of money only to leave unsatisfied with how your eyebrows look. AND no more crying in your car after telling the aesthetician that yes, you love how she shaped your brows with a fake smile.

I am a certified brow artist so believe me when I say I know how to do eyebrows properly. I’ve seen a lot of tragedies and fixed them, waxed real life wooly mammoths (seriously, some people are HAIRY) and cleaned up a lot of messy brows.

The only thing about getting your brows done by a professional is that it is either expensive OR its cheap but you walk away with a hack-job. I am going to teach all you lovely people how to wax your eyebrows at home PROPERLY with this step by step guide.

How to Wax your Eyebrows as a Beginner

As a beginner, you will need to include these steps:

  • Cleanse
  • Brow Mapping
  • Waxing
  • Tweezing
  • Trimming
  • Oil Care

In this post we are going to go over each step and how to do them correctly

The Waxing Kit

You will need to purchase a simple and gentle eyebrow waxing kit. This is the cheapest and easiest way to wax your brows at home. It is important to wax using a gentle wax to ensure that you do not irritate the skin. You can find great kits on Amazon that are inexpensive and work wonderfully.

An option for more advanced eyebrow girlies is to purchase a wax pot and warmer. This is more expensive but if you feel confident enough to use a wax pot and warmer then this is a great option.

What tools will you need to wax your eyebrows at home?

Brow waxing what you need
  • Wax kit
  • Spoolie brush
  • Mini scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Oil cleanser
  • Makeup wipes
  • Long Q-tip
  • Brow Pencil (preferable a dark shade) for brow mapping

What is brow mapping?

Brow mapping is basically when you trace out your eyebrows so that you have guidelines on where to wax your eyebrows. This technique ensures that you get even, perfect eyebrows Everytime!

Take a long Q-tip and measure out where your brow should start, where the arch should be, and where your eyebrows tail should end.

Put the Q-tip in the dip of your nose and hold it straight up. Then mark where your eyebrow should start by drawing a line with the dark brow pencil. Then take your Q-tip, still in the dip of your nose and angle it through the middle of your pupil and where the Q-tip ends is where your arch should be. Then put the Q-tip under your nose and angle it so that it reaches the corner of your eye and mark where your eyebrow tail should end. I have attached a photo so that you can see the proper markings of a perfect brow mapping.

Steps to Wax your Eyebrows at Home

1. Cleanse the eyebrows

This is super important because you want your skin to be clean and ready for the wax. Also, if you have oily skin or any excess oil buildup on the skin it will make it difficult for the wax to stick to your skin.

2. Brow Mapping

As we talked about earlier the second step is going to be to map out your brows. This is the process of marking where your brow should start, where the arch should be and where your brow tail should end. To draw this on the face use a thin brow pencil, preferably one that is two shades darker than what you would normally use.

Once you have marked those lines, connect them such like the photo above. Now you are ready to wax!

3. Brow Waxing & Tips

Apply your wax strip and pull in the OPPOSITE direction that the hair is growing! This is so important to ensure that you get the cleanest results.

I have attached a diagram below that you can print out that shows you all the proper directions to pull the wax strip to wax the eyebrows.

Always start by waxing the middle first. After the middle is waxed, move onto the first brow. Wax the under brow in two strips. Then, wax the top of the brow in two strips. Repeat for the second brow.

When pulling off the strips in the shown above directions, make sure to hold the skin taut as you pull the strip. Otherwise, it will hurt like a biatch.

4. Wipe off brow mapping

Cleanse off the brow mapping/ eyebrow pencil drawings with a natural oil or a gentle oil based cleanser. It is best to wipe off with a plain and natural oil because after you wax, it opens up the hair follicle making the fresh skin sensitive.

5. Tweeze any hairs you missed

Tweeze away any hairs that you didn’t grab with the wax.

6. Trim the brow hairs

HOLD IT BEFORE YOU SKIP READING THIS BIT BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT.

There is a specific way to trim brow hairs!

The front part of the brow, you brush upwards and trim a little bit to make it even. The bottom half of the brow (also known as the tail) you brush downwards and only trim a little bit.

WOOHOO! That is all the steps to professionally wax those gorgeous brows of yours! Let me know if you try it out and if this article was helpful!

Common mistakes in eyebrow waxing are:

- Removing too much hair

- Shortening your tail

- Altering your arches natural shape

- Burning your skin

Start with the middle of the eyebrows, then you want to wax the bottom first (the underbrow) and then wax the top of the brow. You want to complete one full brow top and bottom before moving onto the second eyebrow.
